Welcome to Essentials: EQ

EQ is perhaps the most critical of all processing tools when it comes to shaping the sound of all produced music. On this course, I'll lift the lid on EQ in its myriad forms, encouraging you to explore tone from every possible angle.

The Course

Tone control is one of the most fundamental choices that producers and mix engineers have available for every sound within their mixes.

Creating a space and a role for each instrument, every group of sounds and even for the 2-bus, output stage of a mix offers your tracks power, definition, coherence and richness. The vast majority of sounds you'll record, choose from preset menus or shape entirely from scratch will require tone-shaping and that becomes increasingly true as your productions develop and grow in scale with each new instrument and FX choice you add.

Essentials: EQ will showcase and explore tone options within the context of multiple musical examples and genres, to help you learn and make the best possible EQ choices for all of the sounds within your mixes.

  • Learn that EQ is an essential tool, used throughout the production process
  • Understand the different filter types available within EQs and how they affect tone
  • Discover the difference between broad-ranging tonal shaping and more surgical, problem solving choices
  • Create space for each sound in your tracks, to add defintion and power to your mixes

What You Will Learn

Essentials: EQ begins with a thorough understanding of what 'frequency content' is. It's a term we hear regularly and I'll begin by showing you how - as 'frequency' and 'pitch' mean the same thing - a discussion about tone is also a discussion about pitch.

I'll then take you through the assorted filters and options that a modern EQ offers, before we'll dive into techniques ranging from using some of the most classic EQ designs of all time, through to algorithmic, modern EQ tools which look ahead and anticipate tonal needs in ever-more-detailed ways. Along the way, I'll show you EQ for vocals, drums, synths, basslines, groups of sounds and how tone can be shaped at the output stage of your mixes too.

Let's explore the most commonly-occuring sonic processor all producers and mix engineers need when making music and thoroughly understand EQ's extraordinary capacity for improving the sound of our tracks.

  • Hear EQ applied to a wide variety of sounds in a range of musical contexts, to help you make choices for your own tracks
  • Learn classic EQ techniques including as the Pultec trick and how to tackle Bass Masking
  • Blur the lines between tonal and dynamic processing with Dynamic EQ
  • Discover more modern EQ tools, which assess tonal needs in microscopic detail

I’m Jono Buchanan. I’m a composer and producer specialising in music for TV and Production Music. I write extensively for some of the largest broadcasters around the world, having also worked on films, documentaries, composed for sports broadcasts and much more besides. I’ve always been a huge fan of electronic dance music too and in the early to mid 2000s, worked as a producer of remixes for some of the biggest pop acts of the day, including Whitney Houston, Pet Shop Boys, Shania Twain and LeAnn Rimes.

I have been a visiting lecturer at London’s prestigious Guildhall School of Music & Drama for 25 years. Despite a busy life as a media composer, I’ve never been able to stop myself wanting to teach - I love seeing creativity unlocked in anyone who wants to learn more. For me, the mix of composing, producing and being fascinated by developments in music technology have all developed side-by-side.

YouTube has provided a platform to offer free Logic Pro instruction and on the Jono Buchanan Music channel, a new longer-form video and a Short are posted every week. My Teachable courses will let you take your knowledge deeper, as they're all designed to allow you to unlock your creativity in a more immersive and focused way.
