Welcome to Essentials: Pitch
Pitch is fundamental to everything the music we love actually is - without it, none of us would sing in the shower. How notes combine, bend and evolve is of endless wonder and on this course, we're going to explore Pitch from every possible angle.
The Course
Play a single note on an instrument and you’ll unlock a treasure trove of surprising musical secrets. Inside that single performance lie thousands of tiny component pieces, called Harmonics. And the combinations of those Harmonics give Pitch not just its core base, which we can hear, latch onto and sing back, but also the roots of its tone too.
On this course, I’m going to show you all of the ways in which a deeper understanding of Pitch can help your musical productions. Exploring everything from synth Oscillators to tuning of Drum samples, experimenting with Pitch plug-ins in post-production and even working with Vocoders, Essentials: Pitch has plenty of tricks up its sleeve.
- Understand the inner workings of a single note and what Harmonics are.
- Explore Pitch in synths using Oscillators, Detune, Glide and Vibrato.
- Learn how to tune Drum samples, to bring more coherence to your mixes.
- Get creative with Pitch in post-production.
What you will Learn
There’s so much more than meets the eye when it comes to Pitch. Essentials: Pitch will take you on a journey to the root of every note of your productions, helping you explore how to combine Pitches to create harmonies, perfect out-of-tune notes and also to get creative with unusual pitch relationships in synths and plug-ins.
Perhaps most importantly, we’ll learn that Pitch is present in all sounds, including those which don’t feel immediately ‘pitched’, such as Drums and Percussion instruments. Tightening and understanding the pitch relationships between all of the parts of your production is vital when producing music and on this course, you’ll learn how to feel fully in control of the ways in which Pitch presents itself at all stages through the writing, production and mixing stages of every track you make.
- Use frequency analysis to understand Pitch and Harmonic content
- Enrich your productions with richer, wider synth sounds
- Add pitched flourishes to your mixes with Pitch and Formant offsets
- Get creative with polyphonic Pitch Bend, Vocoding and much, much more

I’m Jono Buchanan. I’m a composer and producer specialising in music for TV and Production Music. I write extensively for some of the largest broadcasters around the world, having also worked on films, documentaries, composed for sports broadcasts and much more besides. I’ve always been a huge fan of electronic dance music too and in the early to mid 2000s, worked as a producer of remixes for some of the biggest pop acts of the day, including Whitney Houston, Pet Shop Boys, Shania Twain and LeAnn Rimes.
I have been a visiting lecturer at London’s prestigious Guildhall School of Music & Drama for 25 years. Despite a busy life as a media composer, I’ve never been able to stop myself wanting to teach - I love seeing creativity unlocked in anyone who wants to learn more. For me, the mix of composing, producing and being fascinated by developments in music technology have all developed side-by-side.
YouTube has provided a platform to offer free Logic Pro instruction and on the Jono Buchanan Music channel, a new longer-form video and a Short are posted every week. My Teachable courses will let you take your knowledge deeper, as they're all designed to allow you to unlock your creativity in a more immersive and focused way.
