Welcome to Essentials: Rhythm & Groove
An understanding of rhythm and groove is an understanding of the seductive power of music itself; how else can we explain that music can make us physically move? But within each beat of each bar is a world of rhythmic possibility, so it's high time we started exploring.
The Course
There’s a reason why your foot taps, your head nods and your mind, body and spirit lock in when the beat of your favourite tracks start up.
Rhythm is fundamental to the experience of being alive - with your heartbeat keeping time - and as patterns and routines play out all around us every day with the rise and fall of the sun, when we sleep and eat and in the sounds present in our lives, it’s no surprise that rhythm is such an essential part of everything music is too.
Essentials: Rhythm & Groove will take you deep inside what rhythm actually is, helping you to take that knowledge and bring it to bear in all aspects of your tracks.
- Hear how time-signatures impact the feel of a track
- Explore the rhythmic differences between musical genres
- Explore rhythmic concepts such as polyrhythms and syncopation
- Exploring Quantize - friend or foe?!
What You Will Learn
Throughout Essentials: Rhythm & Groove , I’ll show you the innate feel of different time signatures, explore the concepts of ‘rushing’ and ‘dragging’, help you lock the rhythmic patterns you program to all of the sounds in your mix and explore the pros and cons of Quantize.
I’ll encourage you to find how your own rhythmic feel can be celebrated and explored throughout your tracks and, even if the patterns you play require a little refinement, how you can retain your own rhythmic sonic stamp.
I’ll explore the concept of a rhythm section and how relationships between drums and bass, in particular, can significantly shift the feel of your tracks.
And I’ll explore how rhythm is present everywhere - not just in drums and percussion parts - but in the melodies you write too.
- Learn the subtle complexities of groove - swing, human feel and grace notes
- Trick and delight your audiences with unexpected rhythm twists
- See how FX like Delay can further enhance rhythmic complexity
- Take the groove of a loop and use it as a rhythmic 'key' for other tracks

Your Instructor
I’m Jono Buchanan. I’m a composer and producer specialising in music for TV and Production Music. I write extensively for some of the largest broadcasters around the world, having also worked on films, documentaries, composed for sports broadcasts and much more besides. I’ve always been a huge fan of electronic dance music too and in the early to mid 2000s, worked as a producer of remixes for some of the biggest pop acts of the day, including Whitney Houston, Pet Shop Boys, Shania Twain and LeAnn Rimes.
I have been a visiting lecturer at London’s prestigious Guildhall School of Music & Drama for 25 years. Despite a busy life as a media composer, I’ve never been able to stop myself wanting to teach - I love seeing creativity unlocked in anyone who wants to learn more. For me, the mix of composing, producing and being fascinated by developments in music technology have all developed side-by-side.
YouTube has provided a platform to offer free Logic Pro instruction and on the Jono Buchanan Music channel, a new longer-form video and a Short are posted every week. My Teachable courses will let you take your knowledge deeper, as they're all designed to allow you to unlock your creativity in a more immersive and focused way.
