Chapter 02: The Orchestra
Introduction To The Orchestra
Let’s learn a little about how orchestras tend to be arranged onstage, to better understand some key terms which will crop up throughout the course.
Firstly, we’ll learn that families of instruments are arranged into ‘sections’, with a string section, for example, broken down into Violin 1, Violin 2, Violas, Celli and Double Basses. There are multiple players in each of these sections, so when you write notes for Violin 1, for instance, you’ll hear 14 different players all contributing to each note you write.
We’ll then see how Woodwinds, Brass and Percussion are arranged on the stage, before briefly discussing how the size of the concert hall or recording studio required for all of these players to fit into will impact their sound too.
