Welcome to Essentials: Reverb
In the natural world, no sound exists in a vacuum. Each is a combination of the sound source itself and the space in which that sound is made. Therefore, nothing could be more fundamental to our understanding of sounds and music than their relationship with reverberation. On this course, Essentials: Reverb, we're going to discover how vital reverb is to every stage of the creative process.
The Course
The theory of how reverb is generated - and how we can control it - is vital but all of that understanding will ultimately be channeled into our productions and mixes.
To start, I'll take you deep inside the essential parameters of a range of reverb plug-ins to demonstrate how each can help enhance your mixes. Quickly, however, we'll move into a variety of deep contexual musical examples.
I'll encourage you to think about Reverb not only from a Type and Decay Time perspective but also from a frequency-content one too; learning to hear and address spatial problems as they arise.
Can you combine and stack reverbs? How much reverb is too much? Can you add reverb to Bass sounds?
Essentials: Reverb will explore these questions and many more.

Personalising spatial treatments - so that they're tailor-made for your tracks - can add entirely new layers of sound design potential to your productions.
Not only can we enhance reverb treatments with a better understanding of frequency-specific Decay Times and onboard plug-in EQ controls but we can go further, finding new ways to explore space.
On the course, we'll uncover reversed Reverbs and the inifinite array of options from which we can choose when we begin to cascade effects creatively; feeding Delays into reverbs and Automating parameters to create the 'story' of space within each mix we undertake.

Your Instructor
I’m Jono Buchanan. I’m a composer and producer specialising in music for TV and Production Music. I write extensively for some of the largest broadcasters around the world, having also worked on films, documentaries, composed for sports broadcasts and much more besides. I’ve always been a huge fan of electronic dance music too and in the early to mid 2000s, worked as a producer of remixes for some of the biggest pop acts of the day, including Whitney Houston, Pet Shop Boys, Shania Twain and LeAnn Rimes.
I have been a visiting lecturer at London’s prestigious Guildhall School of Music & Drama for 25 years. Despite a busy life as a media composer, I’ve never been able to stop myself wanting to teach - I love seeing creativity unlocked in anyone who wants to learn more. For me, the mix of composing, producing and being fascinated by developments in music technology have all developed side-by-side.
