Welcome to Orchestral Programming 03

If you're looking for 'impact' in your soundtrack writing, look no further than the Percussion session. Throughout this course, I'm going to explore the percussive hits, loops and programming techniques used by composers for film, television, games and production music.

The Course

I'll start by taking you through the musical possibilities offered by three leading Percussion sample libraries. These interface tours will begin to highlight some key components we'll return to throughout the Course, including a sense of 'space' around any Percussion hit, its position on the sound stage and its Envelope controls, helping you to shape the length and depth of each hit you program.

Then I'll move into two deep musical examples - programming each piece note by note, sound by sound, so that you're joining me on their compositional journey. The first piece will be designed with speed of writing in mind, using a number of techniques to help you mock up your scores quickly. These will include the use of curated, edited Percussion loops for an immediate 'sound', before moving into note-by-note programming approaches.

The second track will take this further, where I'll build a Percussion-only, Trailer-style track, exploring extended programming and mixing techniques to help you feel in full control of your Percussion writing.

Your Instructor

I’m Jono Buchanan. I’m a composer and producer specialising in music for TV and Production Music. I write extensively for some of the largest broadcasters around the world, having also worked on films, documentaries, composed for sports broadcasts and much more besides. I’ve always been a huge fan of electronic dance music too and in the early to mid 2000s, worked as a producer of remixes for some of the biggest pop acts of the day, including Whitney Houston, Pet Shop Boys, Shania Twain and LeAnn Rimes.

I have been a visiting lecturer at London’s prestigious Guildhall School of Music & Drama for 25 years. Despite a busy life as a media composer, I’ve never been able to stop myself wanting to teach - I love seeing creativity unlocked in anyone who wants to learn more. For me, the mix of composing, producing and being fascinated by developments in music technology have all developed side-by-side.

My Teachable courses will let you take your knowledge deeper, as they're all designed to allow you to unlock your creativity in a more immersive and focused way.

  • Learn from a Guildhall School of Music & Drama Professor with 25 years’ experience
  • Jono’s extensive experience as a media composer is central to this course
  • Immersive, focused teaching
