Welcome to Orchestral Sample Programming 02

A huge number of modern soundtracks for film, television, gaming and production music rely on a curated blend of sounds sourced from the orchestra, from electronic textures and from manipulation of those sound sources using effects processors.

This course will teach you how to place ‘texture’ at the heart of your compositions.

The Course

Firstly, I’ll explain what I mean by ‘texture’; exploring ‘the sound of the sounds’ that we can hear within our imaginations. I’ll put a range of Piano and String ensemble libraries under the microscope to show that the effect of using these Instruments can vary hugely, depending on musical context and Ensemble size. And then we’ll move into two deep compositional cues, starting with a dark, texture-rich piece which makes extensive use of manipulated and processed Orchestral sounds.

The second, more involved track, takes us inside a documentary-style composition, which blends less common, more gestural orchestral articulations with electronics and extensive effects processing, to help you paint with a broader palette of musical colours.

  • Understand 'texture' as a composition and production technique
  • Over 9.5 hours of detailed, focused, immersive learning
  • Blend electronics and effects processing with orchestral sounds, to personalise your compositions
  • Explore composition with more detailed musical colours, to make your compositions unique

What you will learn

Following the foundation of the Orchestral Programming 01 course, it’s time to spread our musical wings and take flight into the hybrid sound-world at the heart of so much modern score.

Many modern soundtracks feature a unique combination of orchestral forces blended with synthesisers, electronic textures, sampling and extensive use of effects processing. With carefully curated sounds, composers can caress, bend, warp and twist sounds into unique compositions, helping to underscore picture with a deep sophistication which is unique to their artistic approach.

On this course, I’m going to show you a wide range of techniques to allow you to turn your musical imaginings into reality.

  • Explore a wide range of approaches to composition and sound design
  • Deeply explained, yet easy-to-follow teaching
  • Kick-start the creative process - build compositions using your musical intuition
  • Personalise what you've learned with your own musical reponses to the techniques explored

Your Instructor

I’m Jono Buchanan. I’m a composer and producer specialising in music for TV and Production Music. I write extensively for some of the largest broadcasters around the world, having also worked on films, documentaries, composed for sports broadcasts and much more besides. I’ve always been a huge fan of electronic dance music too and in the early to mid 2000s, worked as a producer of remixes for some of the biggest pop acts of the day, including Whitney Houston, Pet Shop Boys, Shania Twain and LeAnn Rimes.

I have been a visiting lecturer at London’s prestigious Guildhall School of Music & Drama for 25 years. Despite a busy life as a media composer, I’ve never been able to stop myself wanting to teach - I love seeing creativity unlocked in anyone who wants to learn more. For me, the mix of composing, producing and being fascinated by developments in music technology have all developed side-by-side.

My Teachable courses will let you take your knowledge deeper, as they're all designed to allow you to unlock your creativity in a more immersive and focused way.

  • Learn from a Guildhall School of Music & Drama Professor with 25 years’ experience
